bookMARKs is inspired by the current explosion in self-publishing that has been fueled by artists wanting to utilize technology and the internet to explore possibilities outside traditional publication channels.  Much inspiration also comes from networked groups, efforts and collectives that have embraced the self-publishing ethos and are mounting shows around the world to promote and celebrate this vibrant movement within contemporary photography.  A few prominent examples are Le Garage, the Indie Photobook Library and Self Publish Be Happy among many others.  Please go to our links page to visit and explore their websites.

Many of us are currently involved in creating published works in a variety of methods that include traditionally bound books and print-on-demand digital publications.  Our projects range from bespoke limited editions to inexpensive fanzines to purely digital platforms.  The published photograph is one of the most vibrant and productive areas in current photographic practice.  It takes the artist beyond the notion of the singular image to explore dynamic ways to create and experience their work.

This exhibition is an excellent opportunity to showcase the range of work our diverse group of SPE and NYFA MARK photo artists is engaged in and can potentially act as a networked incubator for creative publication efforts and collaboration.

Our intention is to encourage our colleagues to share their self-published efforts and to create new publications for this event.  We will use this website, its blog and our networking resources to nurture interchange and collaboration within the group and beyond.  Our goal is to explore the possibilities of the published form in the broadest sense possible and how publication affects the way we create and experience our photography.
